I have a special interest in the dietary treatment of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). I began using the specific carbohydrate diet, which helped patients with chronic diarrhea, whether due to irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease. It is a diet that basically eliminated sugar and starches; however, my patients couldn’t sustain it because they were always hungry. I added whole grains, and it seemed to work just as well, and many more patients could follow it.
In 2017, I took away the whole grains from those who couldn’t tolerate them and added healthy fats. Now I find this low-carb diet works very well for a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions, including IBS, GERD, SIBO, inflammatory disease, and helps reverse fatty liver disease.
