This recipe has been added to the shopping list.

Instructions

Hamburger patties and gravy

  1. Combine all the ingredients for the hamburgers in a large bowl using a wooden spoon or clean hands. Don't over-mix since that can make the patties tough. Use wet hands to form oblong patties.
  2. Add olive oil or butter to a large frying pan. Fry over medium-high heat for at least 10 minutes or until the patties have browned. Flip them a few times for even cooking.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the tomato paste and cream. Add this mixture to the pan when the patties are almost done. Stir and let simmer for a few minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Sprinkle with chopped parsley before serving.

Butter-fried green cabbage

  1. Shred the cabbage finely using a food processor or sharp knife.
  2. Add butter to a large frying pan.
  3. Place the pan over medium-high heat and sauté the shredded cabbage for at least 15 minutes or until the cabbage is wilted and golden brown around the edges.
  4. Stir regularly and lower the heat a little towards the end. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Tip!

Switch it up! These patties pair well with any sautéed vegetable… What do you love? Onions, mushrooms, spinach, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, green beans…

Made this with a few variations... Lamb in place of beef, less parsley, and a bit more spice (garlic, Cayenne) for the gravy. The recipe led me to finishing off the patties in the gravy which wasn't ideal, so next time I'll pull them off and do this separate. All in all I loved it, very flavorful and filling. Can't wait to try this again.

Variation for the fried cabbage might be to add onions and a little bacon.
  3. John
great recipe! I could eat this once a week. Not a fan of the cabbage, it seems like all I've been eating since starting Keto is cabbage and I'm sick of it, bleh. Bruce's onion and bacon idea sounds good though. ^

I have made this at least 5 times already. It is delicious. I never thought cabbage could be so addictive and the goat cheese in the burgers tastes amazing. It was definitely out of my comfort zone. I'm so glad I took the leap.
  5. Angela
I am curious to learn if anyone has chosen to grill these patties as opposed to frying?

I cook regularly and I ran into the same issue about adding all patty ingredients. Its not just cooking newbies that will run into this problem. I was going to leave the same comment. Otherwise the recipe is good. I'll use about half the butter the next time on the cabbage though. As I'm still new to LCHF, that much butter was overwhelming for me and my family.

I'm a vegetarian am I able to substitute salmon, tuna and sardines where it calls for meat?

Years ago, I learned to read the recipe all the way through before I cook. When I first looked at it I thought I was to mix the olive oil and butter with the meat. Thankfully, I read it all the way through to see that I was to cook the burgers in the butter and oil.

Second, to everyone who keeps asking about calories, these recipes do not care about the calories so if you want to know how many calories, figure it out. EVERYWHERE on Keto sites it says quit caring how many calories something has. DO NOT cut the fat....get used to it. THIS is critical in all Keto recipes. If something, like the hamburger, has too much grease for your taste, drain it before you make a sauce. Don't blame the recipe for your personal taste.

Finally, this is not the place to ask questions and expect answers from moderators. This is for us to talk to others, with questions like what changes someone else made to a recipe and to support each other.

I am on Day 3, and this meal on Day 1 was amazing, it didn't take long to make - I was worried the sauce would be too sickly but actually when you eat it altogether (I didn't cook the Savoy cabbage too much) its very tasty. I fried the patties for a bit then put them in the oven with foil on top to cook for longer. I didn't put them in with the sauce but it was all very good. I didn't add as much parsley as it said though.

I absolutely love this one ;) It's easy to make and tastes delish :) Must say it's gone straight into my favourite list. Made it again the other day and I made a double portion and froze half down to eat on one of those days where I don't have time to cook.
I really love these recipes, last time I was on keto, I ended up eating meat and salad every night, just changing the type of meat, and I was SOOOOO bored with it in the end. This time it's going so much better, as my food is more varied and still easy to cook.

Seriously delicious! My husband was very nervous when he found out that I would be cooking keto for the whole family at dinner time. He must have just assumed it would be tasteless and unfilling. Well I'm glad this was the first meal I made because he loved it too! I'm stuffed and actually looking forward to leftovers for lunch tomorrow.
  12. Stacie
This was super filling! I didn't realize how much I love cooked cabbage (have always had it raw and didn't love it). I also added ground sausage to the ground beef and it gives it a nice aftertaste. I removed the patties to do the gravy. I put the cooked cabbage in a casserole dish to sit while I finished up, then I placed the patties on top and poured the gravy over everything and mixed it up. Yum! A little too heavy for me but I'm a lighter eater. Next, fathead pizza!

This is a family favorite and is in our weekly rotation now. Frequently, I use vodka sauce instead of the sauce recipe here or use marinara (low carb, no sugar) and add heavy cream. This is fantastic, thanks!

Julie - I was a pescatarian for 32 years and recently started eating meat. It was very hard to do LCHF otherwise. I frequently make this recipe as written and think that tuna (not canned tuna) chunks would be great in this recipe.

Great meal! I absolutely loved it!

What are the macros for this dish? I see it has 11g carbs. What are the fat grams? I see the nutrition link that shows the percentages but I want the actual grams.

    Hi Cindy!

We don't want to promote to much "counting" that's why we only have the carbs in gram.

But If you feel that this is important to you then use the formula below to calculate, a bit complicated though. ;-)

    (%PROTEIN / %CARB) * gram_CARB = gram_PROTEIN

    (%FAT / %CARB) * 4/9 * gram_CARB = gram_FAT

    gram_CARB * 4 + gram_PROTEIN*4 + gram_FAT*9 = CALORIES

What are the macros for this dish? I see it has 11g carbs. What are the fat grams? I see the nutrition link that shows the percentages but I want the actual grams.

Loved this!!! Very delicious. The sauce was amazing.

Very good.... a great match with the fried cabbage, I added some steamed broccoli, then had some leftover meatballs with some keto cauliflower 'hash-browns' today for lunch..... yum.

Hi . A quick question. How may servings per meal are we allowed to eat ??
  22. Kathleen
This was wonderful!, I and my husband are so full! Absolutely delicious! Great meal and it just proves how delicious low carb can be!

This was the first recipe I tried from this site and I LOVED it. Everything I've cooked has been so different and flavorful and satisfying. The tomato cream sauce was such a hit with my entire family. We'll be eating this one again and again.
  24. Tara
Delicious!! I added cumin, garlic, fresh rosemary and mint to the burger, I'll definitely be making this one again!

Really.. this is a great site for their recipes.. but they do not have Diabetic people in mind by not sharing the entire Macro's per servings in their recipes.

We have to watch our protein intake as MUCH as carbs.. and I cannot figure out the Macros for any of your dishes..

What a shame.. Diabetic people have it ruff enough.. but then we gotta pull hair out just to get macros per servings... UNREAL

This was absolutely delicious! I was nervous about making it since it seems diffrent...but me and my husband loved it! Next time I think I will use half the cream had a lot sauce left over.

You are NOT a vegetarian if you eat seafood... You are a pescetarian.
  29. Laura
What percentage of lean to fat ratio do we want for the ground beef? I bought 80% lean 20% fat

Just made this and OH MY GOSH it was so delicious!

This was another hit for my family. Hubby LOVES the sauce! We used 2lb and made 6 burgers. We skipped the cabbage (I'm not a fan) and used fresh spinach instead.

I agree with the others that the directions are not very clear for the burgers. The butter and oil are for frying the burgers, not for mixing into the burgers.

  32. Matthew
This recipe I felt really lacked flavor and was quite bland. I think for me to be convinced to make it again, it would need some significant 'spice recommendations' as predominately cream and tomato paste are not that appetizing for sauce.

Something that might be really helpful for you is to use an app called "My Fitness Pal". There, you can create a recipe by copying and pasting the link to this recipe, and it will tell you all the carbs, protein, and things you need to know (including micronutrients like sodium). It is really helpful! I hope this helps and works for you.

When I calculate calories I get 1088.7!! Is this per serving? I am finding all of the recipes have really high calories...

The first time I made this, I found the sauce a little underwhelming. The next time I made a few tweaks based on other commenters:
    - form meatballs instead of patties. Then it will make more sense to let them simmer in the sauce as the recipe says, which will add a lot of flavour.
    - when the meatballs are browned, before adding the rest of the sauce ingredients, pour a little vodka/whiskey into the pan and let it cook off (can also use stock).
    - instead of tomato paste, use unsweetened tomato sauce (found some in organic/health food aisle).

Made this way, it's one of my favourites!

    *reviewing for sauce only*
The creamy tomato sauce was a huge hit in my house. I added salt. I used the sauce with hamburger patties like the recipe states, I just didn’t have those other particular ingredients (like feta) so my hamburgers were just plain meat but regardless, the whole family enjoyed this dish. The sauce could definitely be used for other things as it was quite tasty!
  41. Fabiane
Mmmm... delish! Will definitely cook it again!????‍?

I've been wanting to make this for a while and finally tried it this week. It was delicious!!! I realize when I make recipes from this wonderful site, it helps me realize that I don't usually eat enough for my meals. And when I do have enough, not only is it delicious, but I'm also so much more satisfied,
  43. kerri
I dunno...I was left a little, I guess 'wanting'. I wasn't impressed nor was I repulsed. Pretty bland in my opinion - nothing special. If I were to make this recipe again, I suppose I'd use tomato sauce rather than paste and add onions and garlic powder to the hamburger before cooking. My 2 cents... I am, however, grateful for the site and recipes. Thank you!
  44. kerri shafer
ditto. might make it again BUT I'll improvise with the seasonings. very bland...
  45. kerri
Agreed. I almost did the same thing, lol. Luckily, I caught the cooking instructions out of the corner of my eye. I need to follow my own rule and read the recipe through before the start.
  46. Charlie
I would recommend not using feta at all.
  47. Adele
I made this to the recipe & both my husband & I loved it. The sauce was rich but perfectly accompanied the hamburgers which would have been a bit bland on their own. Definitely a keeper.

    Hi Shanti,

I love the idea of swapping out the cabbage for zucchini noodles.

How does that change the carb count?

Im trying to stay at <20 to lose wight.
How do you figure that out?

    thanks
