Ingredients

Garam masala
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp coriander seed, ground
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp ground cardamom (green)
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp turmeric, ground
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp paprika powder
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 pinch 1 pinch ground nutmeg
Chicken
  • 1 lb 450 g chicken breastchicken breasts
  • 3 tbsp 3 tbsp butter or coconut oil
  • salt
  • ½ (2 oz.) ½ (60 g) red bell pepper, finely dicedred bell peppers, finely diced
  • 1¼ cups 300 ml unsweetened coconut cream or heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tbsp 1 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped
This recipe has been added to the shopping list.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Combine the spices to make the garam masala.
  3. Cut the chicken breasts lengthwise. Place a large skillet over medium-high heat and fry the chicken in butter or oil until golden brown.
  4. Add half the garam masala mix to the pan and stir thoroughly.
  5. Season with salt, and place the chicken, including the juices, in a baking dish.
  6. Add the finely diced bell pepper to a small bowl along with the coconut cream and remaining garam masala mix.
  7. Pour over the chicken. Bake in oven for about 20 minutes.
  8. Garnish with parsley and serve.

Tips

Not in the mood for chicken? Use lamb or pork instead.

You can buy ready-made garam masala in the grocery store. If using store bought, measure out 2 1⁄2 tablespoons. Just make sure that the spice mix has no added sugar, starches or other unnecessary additives.

    Was hoping that some kind of keto magic would fix this dish, in spite of my intuition telling me there was no way a sauce made of a simple garam masala and such a large proportion of coconut cream could be any good at all. Unfortunately not. This fills my kitchen with the aroma of off milk and spew, and tastes not much better. The recommended side dish of keto naan bread turned out even worse. I'm on an intermittent fast eating one meal per day, and I still can't get this down. Avoid at all costs. Back to cheesy casseroles I go.

    How do i get the sauce to be as thick when using coconut cream - it is very tasty just came out more like soup than thick sauce

    Different brands of coconut cream are thicker or thinner than others so you may wish to try a different brand.

    Many people who eat dairy free can eat butter, and especially ghee due to the absence of lactose. If you need to be completely dairy free, coconut oil is always a good option.

    People with allergies are usually carefull but their friends or relatives might read the recepies and not notice the danger. Even in ghee there is 0,6 % dairy protein. Eating lactose is not life threatening but eating even a small amount of dairy protein can be to a peson who is allergic to dairy.
    I would never have commented this if the site wasn't called Diet Doctor. I like this site but the allergy information should be trustworthy.

    We have not tested this dish in a slow cooker. The sauce may well end up too thin and runny.

    Cinnamon? Did you use cinnamon instead of cardamom in the spice mix?

    It was bound to happen..... Three weeks in keto and I finally found something I do NOT like. It's just too weird to taste cinnamon on my chicken - lol!! I don't care for the "sweetness" of it. I had to put quite a bit of salt and pepper on it and eat it over rice cauliflower to even be able to stand it. I wanted to like it, I really did. I'm going to end up pitching it though. I just can hardly swallow it. Really bummed. Oh well..... Not every recipe suits everyone's tastes, and everything else I've tried has been fabulous.... Even the stuff I wasnt sure I'd like, but I stretched myself to try.... Now I just know this one is a "no" for me.

    Too much coconut milk-thin watery.
    Had high hopes but disappointed.

    This was absolutely delicious. We used an organic heavy whipping cream and we fried the chicken tenderloins in olive oil. We baked it in a smaller glass baking dish. Just wondering what is considered a serving? Or how many servings are there in this dish so we can figure that out.

    That's just the sauce which gets the lovely golden color from the tumeric.

    Hmm - made this and it did not come out at all like the photo. The picture looks like cheese should be involved. I used a Garam Masala spice that was purchased - organic - and it has the same spices in it as if I made the spice mix in the recipe. It tasted OK, but looked unappetizing. I could not find Coconut Cream - so used heavy whipping cream instead. Makes for soupy sauce. I'd have to tweak this some if I do it again.

    The dry ingredients tally up to 7 teaspoons and there are 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon; you can use a little over 2T.

    I don't usually read the comments first but on this occasion wish I had as everything has been so good (apart from the egg butter which we didn't like) but like many comments above, this is runny and soupy and we won't be making it again. We are disappointed because we love spices and curries in this house. I feel bad even complaining because like i said we have LOVED everything so far.

    I used heavy cream and it was absolutely delicious. Cooked the chicken (I used thigh) in butter and used a small casserole dish, stirring halfway though cooking. My exceptionally fussy husband and son both loved it and want it again.

    It tells us hos many grams of carbs, but I cant see where the grams of fat and protein it contains?

    Checked all ingredient labels and it is nowhere near that amount of fat this recipe states so doesn’t help keto at all?! Where is this number coming from? Because chicken breast is very lean so I have no clue where the high fat weight per serving is coming from.

    I made this and it’s great. I used a high quality curry and a teaspoon of garam masala. I served this with shirataki rice. If you find this bland it’s likely you’re using a cheap garam masala or curry powder. Using coconut cream it turns out to be a bit thicker or a bit thinner using coconut milk. I used an instant pot to cook this which made a great dish.

    I always come back to this recipe for its simplicity and great flavor! As I don't normally like cooked/roasted peppers, I replaced them for onions (not sure how it changes the nutritional content, though, but it tastes better for me). I first sautéed the onions with part of the spices, then added the chicken with more spices, then finally baked it all with the coconut cream and the remainder of the spices. It's always a big hit!     I have just discovered Garam Marsala and I love the smell and flavor. I followed the recipe exactly but the chicken breast was really tough. I may have overcooked...3 minutes on both sides before baking the dish for 20 minutes. I may use chicken thighs next time as they are more tender. Thanks for making me stretch my tastebuds Diet Doctor!!

I use the spices to coat the chicken pieces and then saute; I cook completely on the top of the stove. Recently I have used coconut oil, coconut cream and fresh cilantro. I usually double portion and freeze many portions to take to work. I use chicken breast which has been very tender; perhaps because I have been careful not to cook too much. Thanks so much.

    Yes, the photo does have cheese. (Why don't they adjust the recipe)? I added cheese, plus onions for more depth, cinnamon to the GM, drained some liquid from coconut milk, cooked my red peppers and definitely cooked in coconut oil/avocado oil blend.
