Ingredients

Garam masala
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp coriander seed, ground
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp ground cardamom (green)
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp turmeric, ground
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp paprika powder
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 pinch 1 pinch ground nutmeg
Chicken
  • 1 lb 450 g chicken breastchicken breasts
  • 3 tbsp 3 tbsp butter or coconut oil
  • salt
  • ½ (2 oz.) ½ (60 g) red bell pepper, finely dicedred bell peppers, finely diced
  • 1¼ cups 300 ml unsweetened coconut cream or heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tbsp 1 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped
This recipe has been added to the shopping list.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Combine the spices to make the garam masala.
  3. Cut the chicken breasts lengthwise. Place a large skillet over medium-high heat and fry the chicken in butter or oil until golden brown.
  4. Add half the garam masala mix to the pan and stir thoroughly.
  5. Season with salt, and place the chicken, including the juices, in a baking dish.
  6. Add the finely diced bell pepper to a small bowl along with the coconut cream and remaining garam masala mix.
  7. Pour over the chicken. Bake in oven for about 20 minutes.
  8. Garnish with parsley and serve.

Tips

Not in the mood for chicken? Use lamb or pork instead.

You can buy ready-made garam masala in the grocery store. If using store bought, measure out 2 1⁄2 tablespoons. Just make sure that the spice mix has no added sugar, starches or other unnecessary additives.

    I didn't see the measurements for sour cream in the recipe but it says to add it in the instructions. How much should I use? I followed another similar recipe and did 5 1/2 tablespoons!

    Hi Jamie!

    We don't want to promote to much "counting" that's why we only have the carbs in gram.

    But If you feel that this is important to you then use the formula below to calculate, a bit complicated though. ;-)

    (%PROTEIN / %CARB) * gram_CARB = gram_PROTEIN

    (%FAT / %CARB) * 4/9 * gram_CARB = gram_FAT

    gram_CARB * 4 + gram_PROTEIN*4 + gram_FAT*9 = CALORIES

    How do I find the nutrition facts?

    Is the chili powder in the recipe ground chili or chili powder that contains spices such as garlic and oregano, usually used for making chili and Mexican food?

    I made this recipe with several changes. I added green onion, tomato, and a bit of chicken broth. Instead of baking, I simmered it on the stove for a good 1/2 hour. It turned out soooooo good!

    Had this tonight loved it!! I had it with prawns and my daughter had it with chicken, added spinach to get that bit of extra veg in and added more spice and was absolutely gorgeous! I used single cream and cut the chicken into small pieces and fried it in a wok first with the pepper then I added the cream and let it thicken, then poured it all into a dish with the spinach and let just keep warm in the oven and make sure the chicken was cooked through, I added fresh prawns aswell

    Do you think that if I swapped out the garam masala, for lets say a vindaloo spice blend that it would work? I like this dish but i prefer my curry much, much hotter ;)

    This was good, but I made some changes. I thought coconut cream would be gross in this (too sweet), so I subbed coconut milk (as suggested by a previous reviewer), which was perfect! It also seemed ridiculous to heat up the oven and bake this in another pan, so I just added everything to the chicken after browning it, covered it and cooked on low for about 20 mins. Delicious and no need to dirty additional dishes! Served with some bok choy and cauliflower rice to soak up the delicious sauce. Next time, I might try cooking uncovered for a few mins at the end to see if the sauce thickens slightly.

    I used Greek yoghurt instead, it doesn't smell like garam massala. But it tastes very nice, and looks so much better then the one I am used to! And I KNOW what is inside of it! Thanks a lot!

    Made this tonight with a few modifications and we really liked it. I cut the chicken into cubes, I used a combination of coconut milk and heavy cream, I added onions, and I also did not put it in the oven. When I added the liquid, I just put a top on the skillet and let it simmer about 30 minutes. I also used store bought garam masala seasoning. Will definitely make again.

    Very tasty, will make again. Portion size was rather small though so feel it needs the low-carb nan. Didn't have the ingredients for it this time.

    Very tasty. Used coconut milk for the cream. The second day the sauce thickens nicely and it is flavorful enough to enjoy cold if you box some up for lunch. Great over spinach. I fix up a big casserole dish so I have meals prepped all week.

    If you need exact nutritional info... I suppose you could enter the ingredients of the recipe into one of those food tracker websites like Sparkpeople.com (was free last I checked) that compile it for you.

    I just made this but I didn’t have any cardamom. I used coconut milk instead of cream and chicken thighs instead of breasts. I also added a tiny bit of curry powder. I served it with fried cabbage. My family was in heaven! It was sooooo good!!!

    Made this for the first time. Loved it. I was a little suspicious taking it out of the oven, the oil from the coconut cream had separated, still it was very good. Served with Keto Naan (I still need to work on that). My non-Keto peeps had it on rice. Everyone happy.

    Hi, this looks really good.
    It says it has 6g carbs per serving but the only thing with carbs in there is the 1/4 bell pepper, which is 1g of carbs. Where do all the other carbs come from?

    Coconut cream/whipping cream has carbs, as do all of those spices. They can add up quickly!

    a quck note about garam masala: there are two kinds one for poultry and meats and another for fish and vegetables. Neither uses tumeric which is added to your dish later for colour more than taste. I make my own plus a more generic curry powder with tumeric.

    Tried this for the first time and it was delicious! I used coconut cream and expected more of a sauce (as seen in the pic) but mine didn't have that much sauce. Not sure if changing the servings to 2 had anything to do with it. Had it with the cauli rice which was so yummy! Looking forward to tomorrow's lunch :)

    This was amazing over cauliflower rice. I got to use all the spices I've never really had the chance to use, which is why I like the recipes on this site, flavor! We live in a pretty rural area and don't have the opportunity for much variation outside of Chinese and Thai food. Hubs and the boys liked it too, it's a definite addition to the dinner rotation

    Yes, the number listed is the net carbs number. We have already subtracted the fiber out.

    This one is not dairy free.

    Many people who are dairy free can use ghee. If you can not, you can use bacon grease or coconut oil instead.

    I have made this twice in the last week following instructions exactly (using McCormick organic garam masala seasoning). My whole family has gone nuts for it. The coconut cream does not make it sweet at all in my opinion. It’s a perfect match for the spices.

    This turned out as shiny, brown glop. I specifically came to the comment section, hoping that others had suggestions on how to fix it. We're supposed to have this for lunch tomorrow. We can't eat this as it is. I'm hoping that someone can tell us how to give it some flavor before we throw it out. Thank you!

    You can add all of the spice amounts together - 7 teaspoons plus a pinch. That's about 2.3 tablespoons.

    It was bound to happen..... Three weeks in keto and I finally found something I do NOT like. It's just too weird to taste cinnamon on my chicken - lol!! I don't care for the "sweetness" of it. I had to put quite a bit of salt and pepper on it and eat it over rice cauliflower to even be able to stand it. I wanted to like it, I really did. I'm going to end up pitching it though. I just can hardly swallow it. Really bummed. Oh well..... Not every recipe suits everyone's tastes, and everything else I've tried has been fabulous.... Even the stuff I wasnt sure I'd like, but I stretched myself to try.... Now I just know this one is a "no" for me.
